“I talk to the airlines, and they realize there is a looming threat,” Paul Williams told me. “But it’s quite distant for them. They see it as decades in the future. And here is a bit of a shocking thing: the design and certification standards for air worthiness are based on turbulence measurements from the nineteen-sixties. It’s reasonable to ask, Are those standards still fit for the purpose? Will they still be fit for the purpose in 2050?”
